When should plus size women start wearing maternity clothes?
I am a 225 pound mother to be. At this point I am 15 weeks pregnant, but my regular clothes are extremely uncomfortable. I feel stupid wearing maternity clothes, but I don’t won’t to buy more regular clothes if I am going to out grow them. I have lost 14 pounds since I got pregnant, but it feels like my stomach has gotten bigger. It seems like maternity clothes are in the far future, but what do you think?
I generally stick to my husbands t-shirts and eleastic waist pants lol. I started out at 230lbs this pregnancy and have managed to gain only 10 lbs so far
Somehow my button pants from before I was pregnant still fit me this time around (I’m 32 weeks)… not quite sure what that’s about though. Anyways, I generally have 3 or 4 nice maternity shirts and maybe a pair of nice maternity slacks. It just always seems so silly to me to buy clothes I’m only going to wear for 5-6 months.

Wow. I didn’t make it to 15 weeks without them. Most thin moms don’t. Why would us plus moms be expected to? You are sooooo OK wearing them now. Good luck and Congrats on the baby!!

You can wear whatever feels comfortable to you. I am also a plus size woman and I bought a couple pair of sweats to get me through the first trimester, after that there was no choice but to buy maternity. I was uncofortable in even my sweats. i am currently 20 weeks and have been wearing maternity clothes for the last month and a half. You will eventually need them anyway, so why not go ahead and buy them now.

if your regular clothes are uncomfortable buy some maternity ones. Most of them don’t look like maternity clothes any more anyhow. No one even knew my jeans weren’t "regular" jeans, they had cute designs and regular pockets.

Even for smaller woman there is always a stage in pregnancy where your regular clothes do not fit and yet the maternity clothes are still to big. You definatley don’t want to be wearing clothes that are too small and uncomfortable so go ahead and go with the maternity clothes.

If your clothes are tight , then you’re hurting yourself and the baby. Why would you not want to wear them…At least buy yourself some maternity jeans and wear them with extra big sweatshirts like I do sometimes…

Sure, start wearing them. If you tummy is getting bigger and you need other clothes to wear. There are no rule as to how soon you can start wearing maternity clothes. Just make sure you are comfortable. You have probably lost weight in other parts of you body and gained in the tummy. Good Luck and Congratulations!!!

You should buy some pants w/ a stretch waist that don’t necissarily need to be Maternity. I live in athletic pants and sweats (23 weeks along). Then as you start to show, you can buy Maternity clothes. Also, big T-shirts (like your partner’s) work great too. I don’t personally feel comfortable in the fitted Maternity clothing they offer b/c I too am heavy for my height. Remember that when you do get bigger, you may fill out the Maternity clothes differently than you would at this stage.

I think that you are very lucky to be pregnant (there are so many women that can’t) and that ALL pregnant women are beautiful no matter what they are wearing. Treat yourself the best that you possibly can. Wear those maternity clothes if they make you more comfortable. Wear what makes you feel good. Right now is all about YOU! It doesn’t happen very often and it doesn’t last for long, so enjoy!!!
Congratulations!

I am a plus size mother to be. I found it really difficult at the awkward stage. ( to bloated and expanded for regular clothes and not enough belly yet for maternity clothes) I stayed with my regular shirts, and wore jogging pants most of the time. I got an adjustable maternity pants for when I needed to look human to appointments and meetings. Other than that I wore alot of sweats. One’s that don’t have elastic bands on the top and just a draw string I found to be the most comfortable. Now being 32 weeks I found that for myself being plus size, I didn’t look right in maternity clothes for quite a while. untill about 6 months preganat. But it could be how I am carrying. Good Luck

Well I weigh 180 and have just barely begun to show at 6.5 months. I only have a few pair of maternity clothes. As I don’t like most of the things out there for my body type. They have cute clothes now a days just not on me! So what I have been doing is wearing like the stretchy gym pants and shirts that I would normally wear, just in a few sizes bigger. I did this also with my last pregnancy and just had them tailored down to fit me after I had my baby. It is a lot cheaper than buying tons of maternity clothes. Even if you were to get the maternity clothes altered, it still is a little big in the tummy area. And who wants to look pregnant when there not right! If your clothes are no longer comfortable on you, go for it and buy something that IS comfortable! Congrats and Good Luck.

I’m a regular size 14 and am 17 weeks pregnant. I understand about feeling strange buying maternity clothes, but truth is – you gotta be comfortable. I’m trying to buy as few clothes as possible since I’m hoping to lose weight after the baby. I go to the cheaper stores and don’t spend more than $20 on tops or pants. (Usually I find stuff around $15.) But, I also bought a nice black dress for $45, I figure I’ll wear it a few times during the pregnancy. I don’t know about you, but my doctor told me that I should only gain about 20-25 lbs in the whole pregnancy. So, by keeping that in mind I shop. I don’t know if you work outside the home, but if you don’t then you can probably get away with sweats and t-shirts, which are always easy to find at the cheaper stores. Even if you outgrow the clothes you buy, remember that you will still need some clothes for a little while after you have the baby, before you start losing the weight.

i didnt have to wear them until i was 25 weeks. And the mommy of 3 or what ever is extremely wrong. Thin mommies normally take longer to show (like i did and many of my friends) because the uterous has never stretched before.
Every woman is different. You need to wear the maternity clothes when ever you feel uncomfortable in your reg. clothes

I felt the same. Who cares what people think. Enjoy your pregnancy and show it off. I started wearing maternity clothes at about 13 wks. I am not a plus size but I am bigger. Then again I am on my 3rd child so I got big a lot faster then before.

I would go with maternity clothes if you are comfortable in them. I wear them and they are very comfortable. I would try Lane Bryant or Just My Size. They are made specifically for plus size. I’m 13 weeks and haven’t gained weight either. In fact i have lost 20 but not from trying and before that I lost 45 pounds before pregnancy. . Even though you do not gain weight your child is still growing. You are going to still have pregnancy weight some even if you do not gain weight, your baby is. I love wearing maternity clothes and if you are uncomfortable in regular clothes get stretchy pants. I get them 2-3 sizes to big. It gives me room to grow. Try maternity jeans that have the band high at your waist so it looks like regular clothes. I love maternity shirts because most of them show you are pregnant. I am a size 18 and 200 pounds now. I was 275 right before pregnant. They checked and I had what is called hypothyroidism. Once I got on medication my weight started getting lower and lower. I’ve always eaten healthy, no McDonalds or any kind of fast food. Upon occasion a 6 inch sub that my hubby usually has to eat, fruits and veggie and less than a serving of meat daily, I eat bread but don’t go crazy with it. My doctor suggested me eating 100 more calories than my normal intake. I am active and live a healthy lifestyle. I think once you lose weight you notice being pregnant a little more. It’s wierd, you would think it would be opposite. But, I find I love wearing maternity clothes because they have room to grow in. Most of the time even if you do not gain weight your hips start spreading, you may gain more water weight and several other things. As long as your doctor says everything is okay then it is fine. But as for clothes, go with what is most comfy for you. Also, I would get stretchy things such as stretchy pants and stretchy shirts.

Wear what’s comfortable! You don’t want to restrict the baby. Also, maternity clothes are very flattering! I feel my best in maternity clothes!

You can wear them whenever you want. I am plus sized and I found that I could buy elastic waisted pants a size or 2 bigger than I needed and Shirts a size or so bigger from teh plus sized store. I also lost weight when I was pregnant. Just keep shopping in your regular plus sized store…its cheaper.

You should wear what makes you comfortable!!! I had to start wearing some maternity clothes around 14 weeks (just didn’t like anything tight around my belly!). I felt silly wearing the maternity clothes b/c i didn’t really show yet, but i wanted to be comfortable. Oh, and i bought most of my clothes from ebay, i was able to buy in lots that had a variety of sizes so i had clothes to grow in! Good luck and be comfortable!
